TABLE TENNIS RULES

DURATION OF MATCHES

JUNIOR  All matches will be played on FRIDAY AFTERNOONS and schools are asked to be ready to commence matches as close to 4.00 pm as possible. Schools traveling some distance may need to have a delayed start. Matches should finish between 5.30 pm and 6.00 pm,

SENIOR  All matches will be played on FRIDAY EVENINGS AND SCHOOLS AE ASKED TO BE AT THE VENUE AT 5.15pm matches should finish by 7.30 pm

MATCH FORMAT

All teams comprise of 4 players in order of merit. i.e. four for team A and four for team B

Junior matches consist of 6 games of 11 points

Made up of: 4 singles and 2 doubles

Reverse order doubles may be played if time permits.

Open matches consist of 12 rubbers - best of 3 games of 11 points. Made up of 4 singles and 4 reverse singles (1 with 2, 3 with 4) two doubles and two reverse doubles.

A game shall be won by the player or pair first scoring 11 points unless both players or pairs score 10 points, when the game shall be won by the first player or pair subsequently gaining a lead of two points.

A match shall consist of the best of any odd number of games.

THE ORDER OF SERVING, RECEIVING AND ENDS
After each 2 points have been scored the receiving player or pair shall become the serving player or pair and so on until the end of the game, unless both players or pairs score 10 points or the expedite system is in operation, when the sequence of serving and receiving shall be the same but each player shall serve for only 1 point in turn.

The player or pair serving first in a game shall receive first in the next game of the match, and in the last possible game of doubles match the pair due to receive next shall change their order of receiving when first one pair scores 5 points.

The player or pair starting at one end in a game shall start at the other end in the next game of the match and in the last possible game of a match the players or pairs shall change ends when first one player or pair scores 5 points.

INTERVALS

Play shall be continuous throughout a match except that any player is entitled to:

An interval of up to 1 minute between successive games of a match

Brief intervals for toweling after every 6 points from the start of each game and at the change of ends in the last possible game of a match

Note that, as indicated in the score sheets, doubles teams must comprise of 1 and 2, 3 and 4.

DRESS

An official sports uniform which conforms to your school’s regulations is required.

SUPERVISORS

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE HOST SCHOOL TO ENSURE THAT A RESPONSIBLE SUPERVISOR IS PRESENT AT ALL TIMES. IT IS ALSO ESSENTIAL THAT EACH SCHOOL SENDS A SUPERVISOR WITH ITS TEAMS.

EQUIPMENT

Each school is expected to provide bats for its team members and ONE match ball for each team. Coloured balls are preferred. 40 mml are the preferred ball.

SCORE SHEETS

It is the responsibility of each player to record his score after each game in his own score book.

EXPLANATION 
A GAME
